It is also a journey through Seyran's life, from her humble beginnings as a Muslim girl in Turkey's slums to a female leader daring to challenge her own religion. Her quest for change takes her on a journey around the world, meeting with different people connected through faith, from sex workers in a German brothel to Uyghur LGBTQ youth and traditional female imams in China. This is the story of Seyran's personal and ideological fight for the modernization of Islam. Seyran believes the only way to fight against radical Islam is through Islam, which is why, in her liberal mosque, there is no gender segregation or exclusion based on sexual orientation. In return, she was shot, received fatwas and death threats, and now has to live under constant police protection. In 2020, Seyran Ates - a Turkish-German lawyer, feminist, and one of the first female imams in Europe - is fighting for a sexual revolution within Islam. They received neither Fatwas nor bodyguards. In the 1960s, the hippies championed the idea of a sexual revolution. We envision Prism as a chain letter, interweaving scenes made by the three filmmakers in dialogue with each other. While the film deconstructs these issues, it also tries to reconstruct by creating a film in a collaborative manner, which overcomes these biases.

How can the three filmmakers with different skin colors, be together in one frame? How can they create a common film on this topic? The film problematizes the objectivity of the camera and its inequality of power to tackle other inequalities in society based on skin color. Such white-centricity means that photography assumes and privileges whiteness. Photographic media is technologically and ideologically biased, favoring Caucasian skin. For Prism, Belgian filmmaker An van Dienderen invited Brussels-based Rosine Mbakam from Cameroon and Paris-based Eléonore Yameogo from Burkina Faso to work together on a film in which the differences in their skin color serves as a departure to explore their different experiences with the biased limitations of the medium.
